​MISSION AND HISTORY

Mokau Museum seeks to make accessible artefacts, documents and photographs of significance to the Tainui region.  

 

Our collections fall into the following categories:

 

  • Maori collection - taonga, taiaha, adzes, tiki, heru, patu

  • Natural history - moa bones, whalebones, fossils

  • Township history - post/telephone, groceries, projector, fire extinguisher, cannonball, streetlamp, dentistry

  • Industry history - saddles, milling, mining, farming equipment

  • Family history - books, maps, written text, newspapers, photographs
